Regional Regulations
There remains a piecemeal approach to the introduction and application of environmental regulations as they apply to shipping and INTERTANO’s Members. While the development of the US’s Vessel Incidental Discharge Act (VIDA) is a key example of the need for INTERTANKO to remain actively engaged in the legislative process at a national level, there are other parts of the world where regional and national environmental standards require INTERTANKO’s active engagement, for example in China with waste reception facility regulations and in New Zealand with biofouling rules. INTERTANKO will play an active role with national and regional authorities in ensuring that any future requirements are practicable, reasonable and in line with international (IMO) standards.
