INTERTANKO statement on the pause to Project Freedom

Following yesterday evening's announcement that "Project Freedom" is to be paused while diplomatic efforts continue, INTERTANKO welcomes the sentiment behind the initiative and the recognition of the urgent need to address the plight of seafarers and vessels in the Gulf.
INTERTANKO Marine Director Phillip Belcher said: "We acknowledge the intent to alleviate the situation facing seafarers and operators in the Gulf, and the diplomatic efforts now underway are to be encouraged. However, the concerns set out in our statement of 4 May remain. Without a meaningful and verifiable ceasefire on both sides, and clear, coordinated guidance to industry, the conditions for safe transit are not yet in place."
INTERTANKO Managing Director Tim Wilkins added: "Any framework for resumed transits must be developed in dialogue with industry. Owners, operators, and seafarers bear operational risk and must be part of the conversation that defines what 'safe transit' means in practice. That dialogue should encompass navigational safety, the human element, and the legal and sanctions environment in which our Members operate."
Some 105 tankers operated by 43 INTERTANKO Member companies remain in the Persian Gulf, with approximately 2,448 seafarers continuing to face a complex and uncertain environment.
