User Guide for the INTERTANKO Fuel EU Maritime Calculator

To help Members create a forward-looking strategy to meet global decarbonisation targets, we have developed a Fuel EU Maritime Calculator (FEUM Calculator).
Recognising that the decarbonisation challenge evolves with new technologies and fuels, emerging regulations and changing market dynamics, a multidisciplinary approach is required to lower CO2 emissions on board, such as energy efficiency measures, alternative fuels or energy sources.
This guidance document offers a practical tool to understand how to calculate the Compliance Balance and the consequent value of the Penalty required for compliance by the Fuel EU Maritime (FEUM) regulation or, in cases where ships are compliant, the value of the surplus obtained.
In cases where a surplus is obtained, the document provides examples on how to minimise the costs at a fleet level by pooling in compliance with other ships. The document also provides a cost impact estimated under the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) regulation. Focusing on the fuels currently available, the calculator specifically zooms in on biofuels as a key compliance option, given their common acceptance by EU regulators and verifiers at this stage of FEUM implementation.
