Seafarers’ Initiative: Guidance for seagoing professionals moving ashore

20 November 2025

Transitioning ashore can be an exciting, enriching and rewarding chapter in a seafarer’s career. With their extensive background in maritime operations, deep professional knowledge, hands-on experience, and operational insight, former seafarers bring immense value to shore-based roles within the maritime industry. Their expertise enhances the management and efficiency of shipping companies, contributing directly to operational excellence, safety, and strategic decision-making.

The aim of this document is to provide valuable insights for prospective shoreside professionals, highlighting some of the key challenges they may encounter during this shift. It also serves to guide office-based staff on how to effectively support, engage with, and welcome former seafarers into a relatively new and unfamiliar working environment.
